Fiji

The Republic of Fiji is a chain of islands in the South Pacific on the continent of Oceania. The archipelago is more than 330 islands and only 110 are inhabited. Fiji covers a total area of 75,000 sq mi and a total land area is 7,100 sq mi. 87% of the total population of 924,610 live on the two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. 75% of Fijians live on Viti Levu's coasts: Suva-the capital city, Nadi-tourism hub and Lautoka-sugar cane industry. Fiji became indépendant from Great Britain in 1970 but is still apart of the Commonwealth of Nations. The Union Jack is still on the Fijian Flag.

Fiji as a young Man

When I first arrived in Fiji in early 2004 it was a different place. It had roads and streets, hotels and hostels and establishments for food and drinks. But it was different, it felt more raw and perhaps even innocent.

Back Again

Nearly 20 years later and Fiji has grown up.

The airport was the first indication. In 2013, modernization of passenger terminal facilities at Nadi Airport began. In 2019 they began further improvements and construction in and around the airport continue. Many new and modern facilities have been erected and the future of Fiji seems promising.

Matamanoa

Matamanoa Island is an intimate and secluded adults only Fijian resort. It is one tiny island, one perfect hotel and it is barely a one half mile across.

Castaway Island

Monuriki is the official name of the island. Tourists and travel profesionals refer to Monuriki as 'Cast Away Island'.

The island was the location for the 2000 film “Cast Away” starring Tom Hanks.

Yanuya Island

The images and stories about Fiji paint a picture of chic hotels and a tropical paradise, it most certainly is. This island is a real island with real Fijian people just living their lives. The people of Fiji are some the best rugby players on earth .
