Pigeon Island National-Fort Climb

Pigeon Island is a 44-acre islet located in Gros Islet in the north of Saint Lucia. The island was artificially joined to the mainland by a men piling up dirt until you could walk across it.

Saint Lucia was changed hands over 14 times as the British and French attacked and plundered one another. It is free and independent today but Queen Elizabeths portrait still adorns the currency and it is apart of the Commonwealth.

Brittish Fort

The British canons are still sitting atop Pigeon Island, they have a range of 2500 yards. I sat on one the largest cannons imagining what it might be like to see a French ship coming into range and firing to keep them away. The British fort sits at the top of the hill. It is located at the highest point and offers strategic views in every direction. The ruins of an 18th century British fortress are all around you.

The views as you climb up the hill are spectacular. I simply love to imagine myself as a “red coat” defending his majesties land. The were the days of code and honor and country.

The Flame Tree

(also called Royal Poinciana, fire tree or flamboyant tree).

It is a tropical tree producing large, fiery red or golden flowers that blossom from spring through summer. Even after they bloom they have these large pods that are very cool.
