Sage Mountain

Sage Mountain National Park is a 96 acre park thats small but full of wonder. It has easy trails through cool, green rainforest that opens, almost gently, onto a view of the whole island world below.

The trail into Sage Mountain feels like stepping through a door into somewhere cooler and gentler than the rest of the island. The air turns thick and green almost immediately, filtered through layers of broad leaves until the light comes down soft and dappled, more suggestion than sunshine. Every few steps there is something to notice, a fern uncurling, a vine looping overhead, the low hum of insects going about their day. The path itself is short and forgiving, more of an easy wander than a climb, the kind of hike that rewards you generously for very little effort. By the time you reach the top and the trees finally part enough to show the islands scattered out below, there is a quiet, settled feeling that comes with it, the sense of having found something the rest of the island keeps mostly to itself.

Jim runs the little spot near the park entrance, a former Royal Navy chef who found his way to Tortola and ended up famous for one thing above all else, a banana shake that has apparently ruined lesser milkshakes for anyone who tries it. I found him through a TripAdvisor mention and figured it was worth a stop after the hike. It was. I ended up driving clear across the island more than once just for another one, which is not something I typically admit to doing for a beverage, but there it is. Sometimes the best souvenir from a hike is not a photo of the view, it is a shake you cannot stop thinking about.
