Black Canyon - Gunnison
Its official name is Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and it is located in Colorado on the western side of the state and Rocky Mountains. It has a total land area of 30,750 acres and is estimated by the NPS to over 2 billion years old.
The main feature and is named after the dark colored deep walled gorge that was carved by the flow of the Gunnison River that sits at the base of the canyon. The Black Canyon walls rise at over 2,000 feet above the Gunnison River, which roars at the bottom of the canyons.
The Howling Canyon Winds
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park was established in 1999. Trails along the north and south rims have views of the Black Canyon's dramatic drops and the striated Painted Wall cliff.
Upstream of the Black Canyon the state of Colorado built a damn and created a series of storage and hydropower reservoirs.
