Montserrat

Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain range near Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. The main peaks are Sant Jeroni, Montgrós and Les Agulles. It is well known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary.

The Monastery

Santa Maria de Montserrat is an abbey of the order of Saint Benedict. It is notable for the image of the Virgin of Montserrat.

The monastery was founded in the 11th century and rebuilt between the 19th and 20th centuries, and still functions to this day, with over 70 monks.

The Mountains

The highest elevation is at 4,055′ with the prominence sitting at 2300′. The mountain is composed of strikingly pink conglomerate, a form of sedimentary rock. The rock structures seem to bubble out as if it were stress ball or a handful of slime squashed in a child’s hand.

On a clear day, you can see as far as the Pyrenees Mountains and the island of Marollca.

Up in the clouds

You can walk to the top or take the tram, I chose to take the tram and walk down and I feel like this is the right move. I like to get my exercise in while exploring new places. The ratio of people walking down vs walking up is probably 1000-1 but if you are up for it you will get a solid work out.
