Giza Plateau
Millions flock here to witness the allure and wonder of the Great Pyramids. The magic of what was—and what still is—is on full display. Legends we’ve read in books, stories we’ve seen on screen… it all makes this place feel like a dream etched in stone.
How did they build such magnificent structures with copper tools and chisels? And who really built them? So many questions. So many mysteries that still linger in the desert air.
Now, having seen them in person, I can say with certainty: there’s no way it happened exactly the way they told us in history class.
The Pyramids and the Sphinx have been on my list since I was a little boy. Standing before them now… it’s humbling. Surreal. And honestly, it’s a feeling I’ll never forget.
The Giza Plateau is a limestone plateau in Giza, Egypt, famous for its ancient pyramids and the Great Sphinx. It's one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world, holding the Great Pyramid of Giza, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.
The Pyramid of Khafre still has the limestone cap on top, this is not the Great Pyramid.
Everyone thinks it is, I thought it was………..It is not.
Great Sphinx
The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a human, and the body of a lion. Facing directly from west to east, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx appears to represent the pharaoh Khafre.
It represents Ra-Horakhty, a form of the powerful sun god, and is the incarnation of royal power and the protector of the temple doors. It is 240 feet long from paw to tail, and 66 feet high from the base to the top of the head and was constructed around 2500 BC.
Recent Findings and Theories-
We’re told it was built with copper tools, chisels, and sheer manpower. But standing there in front of it… part of you can’t help but wonder if there’s more to the story than history class let on. The pyramids are much older than we think and were built with technologies that we are not aware of now.
The Sphinx is much older and was built as long ago as 7000-9000 B.C.
The pyramids were built along an abandoned branch of the river Nile.
Cairo’s only 5 star hotel is perfectly situated just outside the perimeter of the pyramid grounds.
It is a Marriott Property and has all the amenities the brands name might suggest.
A nights stay is not cheap but the second the bellhop opens the door to your room it is completely justified. The room is magnificent and the property was beyond expectation. The trip here would have been a different experience all together having stayed in a different place or location. Some argue that traveling to exotic locations is about being amongst the people and experience things as a local, that is a valid argument and essential part of why you come. I feel like you can do that but also enjoy all the luxuries of home and setting up your “basecamp” in foreign lands at the best place possible is not a bad thing. The Mena House is the best place possible!
