Scottish Highlands

So, what exactly is a loch? In Scotland, a “loch” is what the rest of us would simply call a lake. But let’s be honest—“loch” just sounds more mysterious, doesn’t it? Especially when there’s talk of monsters lurking in the depths. For the record, I didn’t spot any creatures during my visit. What I did find was a stretch of deep blue water framed by a chorus of vibrant greens, golds, and purples, with fluffy clouds hanging low like they were trying to catch their reflection. It’s the kind of view that makes you forget you ever came looking for a monster.

There’s nothing quite like your first encounter with a Highland cow. With their long, windswept bangs and majestic horns, they look like they wandered straight out of a fairytale—or maybe a rock band. These iconic Scots are built for the wild, their shaggy coats perfect for fending off Highland winds and sideways rain. But don’t let their rugged looks fool you—there’s a calm, gentle soul behind those big brown eyes. Spotting one in the misty hills feels like stumbling on a little piece of Scottish magic.

These cows are compact powerhouses, standing around 4 feet tall and weighing up to 1,800 pounds. While their famous ginger coats steal the spotlight, these shaggy icons also come in black, white, yellow, dun, and brindle—perfectly suited for Scotland’s wild weather.
