Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. The city has almost 3.4 million people and the metropolitan are is close to 7 million making it is the 2nd largest city in Europe. It has been the capital of Spain since 1561

The municipality covers 233 sq miles in size and lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula. The city is situated on an elevated plain about 300 km (190 mi) from the closest seaside location.

It is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. its influence in politics, education, entertainment, environment, media fashion, science, culture, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. It also showcases a large economic output and a high standard of living.

Madrid was not planned, it was a stop on the way home and the plan called for a quick transfer to another flight but due to an unforseen disaster in Philadelphia (truck explosion on the interstate) flights were canceled leaving me in Madrid for 2 days. A curse turned into a blessing.

Arrival

Madrid Barajas Airport-(code: MAD)

The Madrid airport stands out as soon as the plane lands and taxi’s into the terminal. Traveling gives you anxiety and stress and this place gives you relaxing vibes. Natural light, high beams and pillars encased with a bamboo underbelly and a soothing color scheme set the tone. It’s also easy to navigate which helps you get where you're going smoothly The amenities and food selection are first class. I normally don’t review an airport but Barajas gets a strong shoutout from me….it is amazing and deserves some recognition. In a world full of shit airport, Barajas stands above at the top.

Royal Palace of Madrid

Palacio Real de Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family at the city of Madrid, although now used only for state ceremonies. The palace has 1,450,000 sq ft of floor space and contains 3,418 rooms. It is the largest royal palace in Europe.

Catedral de la Almudena

Almudena Cathedral is a Catholic church in Madrid, Spain. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid. The cathedral was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993. One of the famous cathedrals in Madrid, this beautiful church is right next to the Royal Palace in the city. The cathedral was opened for the public after being blessed by the Pope John Paul II while he was visiting the city of Madrid in the late nineties. The uncommon feature of the church is the location of the cross, which is North-South, instead of the usual East-West. A place to worship Virgin Mary, this Madrid Cathedral has stunning interiors as well as exteriors and every corner makes for beautiful pictures.

Around Town

Madrid is a metropolitan city that combines historical Spanish architecture with modern industrial vibes. It offers anything you could possibly want in a vibrant city with the historical charm that pays homage to its past. Each turn offers wonder and excitement. If you are a man with a camera there is no shortage of interesting things to point and shoot at.

People

Madrid is full of friendly people that are very outgoing. If you needed directions or a suggestion they are quick to help and almost everyone speaks English on top of Spanish. Just like the rest of Spain the folks are; well-dressed, well-mannered and are regularly smiling making visitors feel at home. There is a strong police presence and they interact positively on the streets so you can enjoy and be at ease.

Hotel Urban 5*

The room we stayed in felt like a small apartment with a lofted bonus room. The bed was solid and led to a great night sleep, it is surround by plenty of charging plugs and outlets which is very nice. The glass elevators give you a great view of how well the hotel is built and the detail and effort put into this renovated, urban oasis. The hotel is situated in a perfect location and made seeing all the stuff a breeze. I highly recommend this place to a friend and would definitely stay here again.
