Serengeti

The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa, spanning the Mara and Arusha Regions of Tanzania. The protected area within the region includes approximately 30,000 km² of land, including the Serengeti National Park and several game reserves.

Getting There

Getting in and out is no easy task.

By Foot-

Plane- miniature plane or take an

Automobile- known as the “African Massage”.

The Cradle of mankind

Tanzania is home to some of the oldest hominid settlements unearthed by archaeologists. As you drive into Serengeti there is a group of small mountains and a statue of two giant skulls to mark the spot.

Prehistoric stone tools and fossils have been found in and around Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania, an area often referred to as "The Cradle of Mankind".

MaAsai of the Serengeti

A proud, nomadic warrior race who count their wealth in cattle and children, the Maasai are struggling to integrate themselves in a dwindling world. No longer able to roam as freely as before with their herds, they must restrict their activities based on Tanzania governmental policies.

The Maasai did not kill wild animals nor damaged their environment. They subsisted on the blood, meat and milk of their herds. They disapproved of agriculture on the grounds that it ruined the land for grazing. But today, they are learning to farm and to trade their crafts, their skills and their produce, cooperating with the tourist industries, taking their place as guides, drivers, trackers, cooks, assistants and managers to bring in much-needed revenue for their government and training opportunities for their young people.

Landscape

The park in total is a massive 5,700 square miles. It is know as an expansive grassland but it is much more than that.

Animal Life

You don’t come to Serengeti for the weather, you are here for the animals. You will get all you handle here.

You will find 2.5 million hoofed animals, 4,000 lions, 1,000 leopards, 550 cheetahs, and 500 bird species.

Giraffes

The Masai giraffe also spelled Maasai giraffe, and sometimes called the Kilimanjaro giraffe, is a species or subspecies of giraffe. It is native to East Africa.

It has distinctive jagged, irregular leaf-like blotches that extend from the hooves to its head. The Masai giraffe is currently the national animal of Tanzania.

gentle giants bring the fear

The elephants are family oriented, gentle grazers of plants and trees. Big cats are capable and do eat elephants if the elephants are young, injured, old or if they are desperate and starving and a pride teams up. However elephants are massive and strong, they have large tusks and if they feel threaten can be absolutely menacing. Elephants are one of the few animals lions fear and take notice of.

Here me Roar

Leopards- These beautiful cats are solitary animals and spend most of their life alone. If you see adult leopards together, chances are they are about to have sex.

The King

These cats are the exact opposite and live in packs called pride.

Hot Air Balloon

This is an 100% absolute must do when you come here, period. This puts everything in perspective……..you have to get up in the early, early darkness and begin as the sun rises……..that’s when animals are on the move after all.
